Kitchen Plumbing Maintenance Tips
The kitchen is an area of your home that you spend so much time in, especially if you cook and clean up! Maintaining the plumbing in your kitchen can put off expensive repairs in the long run. Knowing what to look for can go a long way to keeping up with maintenance. Mr. Rooter Plumbing has put together these plumbing maintenance tips to keep your kitchen healthy and working correctly.
If you own a home, you have a sink, a dishwasher, and a garbage disposal. These appliances are used frequently, and if they aren’t maintained properly or installed correctly, they can cause problems in your kitchen.
Know Where Your Kitchen Faucet Shut-Off Valve Is
If your kitchen sink is full of water, there’s a good chance that it’s not just because you left the faucet running. If you have an older home, there could be a leak in your supply line or drain pipes. Locate the shut-off valve under the sink to determine if this is the case. You may even want to mark it to know where to start looking when something goes wrong.
Chrome Faucets Are the Easiest Option for Cleaning
Chrome is easier than stainless steel for cleaning, but both are easy if cleaned regularly. You can clean chrome by scrubbing it with a soft cloth dipped in baking soda and water.
Pour Boiling Water Down the Drain to Get Rid of Clogs
If you have a clogged drain, pouring boiling water down it can clear it right up. This works because the hot water will expand and force out whatever is causing the blockage.
Pour Salt In the Drain, Then Follow With Boiling Water To Remove Clogs
Boiling water alone is not enough to clear your kitchen sink drain. If that's the case, pour a cup of salt in the sink first, then follow it with a cup of boiling water. Then flush with cold water to remove any remaining debris inside your pipes.
1:1 Baking Soda and White Vinegar To Clear Your Garbage Disposal
This is one of my favorite DIY plumbing solutions. Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. Wait 10 minutes, then pour boiling water down the drain to flush out any remaining residue. This deodorizes and helps clear clogs at the same time!
Run Citrus Peels Through To Remove Garbage Disposal Odors
Citrus peels are great for getting rid of lingering odors in your garbage disposal because they contain enzymes that break down proteins into smaller pieces that can be flushed away easily without causing any damage to your plumbing system or garbage disposal blades. Just run citrus peels through your garbage disposal, and the odors will disappear!
