How to Prevent Rust Stains in Toilet Bowls

What’s the only thing worse than cleaning your bathroom? Having to look at a “dirty” toilet after you’ve just finished cleaning it.

Unfortunately, rust stains are all too common in our bathroom. And while they may not be caused by dirt and grime, they’re not something most homeowners want to look at every time they step into the shower.

Eliminate and Prevent Toilet Bowl Rust Stains

Toilets aren’t made of metal, so why are they rusting? It turns out, it’s actually your water that’s causing the rust, not the bowl itself. If your home has water that’s high in iron (such as well water) you may experience more rust stains than others.

If you’re ready to tackle rust stains for good, we’re here to help!

Cleaning Rust Stains

First things first, don’t turn to bleach, since it can actually make stains worse. You also don’t want to clean with anything too abrasive, because scratching the bowl can make it easier for rust to build in the future.

Now that you’re ready to clean, create a paste of 3-parts baking soda and 1-part vinegar. Then scrub the bowl with your mixture for one minute. Then clean the entire bowl with warm water and flush.

Preventing Future Stains

Preventing rust stains is a lot easier than tackling them, so ensure your bowl stays sparkling clean by:

  • Cleaning your toilet once a week.
  • Drying your toilet immediately after cleaning it (since sitting water leads to rust).
  • Installing a whole home water softener to cut down on the amount of metal in your water.
