The Complete Guide to Toilet Plungers

While toilet plungers may be a staple household item, you might not know that they come in many varieties or even know exactly how to use one. Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Oneida is here to help.

3 Types of Plungers

Technically, you can use any kind of plunger to unclog your drains, but some kinds are better suited for specific jobs than others. You might come across three toilet plunger types:

  1. Regular plunger: These plungers most often feature a simple rubber cup. As a basic kind of plunger, they are best used for unclogging sinks or drains because they do well on flat surfaces.
  2. Toilet plunger: Toilet plungers, or flange plungers, also feature a rubber cup but include a flap that folds out from the cup. This flap makes the plunger ideal for unclogging toilets, as it can create extra suction.
  3. Accordion plunger: Accordion plungers feature small cups that make them especially suitable for unclogging toilets. These plungers can be difficult for beginners to use, but they provide powerful suction.

How to Use a Plunger

When you have a clogged drain, understanding the right technique for unclogging it is just as important as choosing the best toilet plunger for the job.

Unclogging a Sink or Tub

Here is a quick overview of how to use a plunger to unclog a sink or tub:

  1. Place a wet rag on the overflow drain to completely seal the drainpipe.
  2. Position the plunger over the drain. There should be enough water to cover the cup of the plunger.
  3. Use a quick, even up-and-down motion to plunge the drain. Be sure the plunger remains sealed against the surface of the sink or tub the entire time.
  4. Remove the plunger after a few pumps to see if the drain is unclogged. Resume the process if it is not.

Unclogging a Toilet

The process of unclogging a toilet is slightly different:

  1. Make sure the water level in the toilet bowl is about halfway. If not, add or remove water accordingly.
  2. Insert the plunger into the toilet bowl. Make sure the rubber ring fits directly in the drain opening.
  3. Use a quick, even up-and-down motion to plunge the drain. Be sure the plunger remains sealed against the surface of the toilet bowl the entire time.
  4. Remove the plunger after several pumps to check if the drain is unclogged. Resume the process if it is not.
