Plumbing Plumbing Tips

Is Your Kitchen Sink Costing You Money?

Determining how to conserve water is important. Not only is using less water better for the environment, it’s easier on your wallet too. While the big-ticket water users in any home are often the toilet, showers, and washing machines, it’s important to address the kitchen as well as the bathroom and laundry room.

Dish washing is the single biggest water hog in your kitchen. However, there are a few ways Mr. Rooter of Olympia recommends addressing your kitchen water usage and ensuring it doesn’t get out of hand. To conserve water, try using one of these tips:

Use Your Dishwasher

Many Americans own a dishwasher but refuse to use it. Why? There’s a common misconception that dishwashers aren’t energy efficient, and that washing dishes by hand can save water. However, in most cases, using a dishwasher saves water—up to $40 and 5,000 gallons per year.

Don’t Pre-Rinse

Most modern dishwashers are great at what they do—so great, in fact, that in most cases, you simply don’t need to rinse before loading. Skip the rinse for all but the biggest pieces of food debris. If you’re finding food particles stuck to your dishes, check your filter—usually located at the bottom of your dishwasher.

Upgrade Your Dishwasher

If you have an old, ineffective, or inefficient model, consider upgrading to boost your water savings. Today’s models are supremely energy efficient and use much less water than their older counterparts. As a bonus, most are relatively silent as well.

Hand Wash the Right Way

If you don’t have a dishwasher, make sure you’re handwashing safely and efficiently. Clean the sink first with a kitchen disinfectant. Then, fill the sink with soapy water and turn off the tap after each rinse. Check regularly for leaks and address them as soon as possible.
