    A water softener removes the minerals that cause hard water. Hard water contains high levels of calcium, magnesium, and other ions. These minerals can leave behind deposits on surfaces and inhibit the effectiveness of your soap and detergent. These mineral deposits can also cause damage to your pipes, plumbing fixtures, and appliances.

    A water softener uses an ion exchange process to remove these minerals and replace them with sodium ions. This process involves passing the hard water through a resin bed that contains sodium ions, which attract and trap the mineral ions. A regeneration process is then used to flush the mineral-laden resin and replace it with fresh sodium ions.
