Why Does My Toilet Smell So Bad?

Dealing with a smelly toilet can be extremely frustrating, especially if you've spent hours scrubbing and cleaning your bathroom. If your porcelain bowl is sparkling, yet it continues to emit awful odors, then you're probably struggling with a hidden plumbing problem. At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we provide quality residential and commercial plumbing services for property owners in Atlanta, Georgia, and surrounding communities. Are you looking for ways to make your foul toilet smell fresh again? Here are some helpful tips for troubleshooting the issue.

Broken Seal

Beneath the toilet base and the bathroom floor, there should be a thick layer of caulk. If it appears that your seal has been deteriorating or damaged, then this may be the cause of the stench. If urine and other debris have made their way underneath the toilet, then bacteria may have begun to proliferate. If this is the case, you will need to remove the toilet, clean and sanitize the floor, return the toilet in place, and re-caulk. If you're nervous about the idea of removing your toilet, then call the expert plumbers at Mr. Rooter Plumbing and we will be happy to perform the task.

Damaged Flange

Underneath your toilet, there is a thick wax ring called a flange. This ring creates a water-tight and air-tight seal between the wastewater pipe and your toilet. If it has become worn out due to age or has been broken, then gas from the sewer line may be rising into your bathroom. Replacing the flange should cure your putrid bathroom air.

Vent Pipe Issues

Your vent pipes play a very important role. When they become blocked or damaged, they can suddenly stop working. Carefully climb onto your roof and check the toilet vent pipe for signs of leaves, bird's nests, or other debris. If the pipe has been sealed off, then the foul sewer gases aren't going to escape properly. Remove these materials and wait a few days to see if the smell disappears. If not, then there may be a more complex plumbing issue at hand.
