Removing Air from Your Pipes
Do your faucets spit and sputter every time you turn one on? Having air in your pipes can be incredibly noisy and frustrating. Thankfully, in many cases the solution is simple. Air can easily become trapped in the upper pipes, and to get rid of it, you'll need to force it out of your system. At Mr. Rooter of Atlanta, we enjoy helping our local residential and commercial clients get the most from their plumbing systems. Do you want to know how to remove the air from your pipes? Here is a simple procedure you can do right away.
Turn Off Your Main Water Supply
The first step is to locate your main water line supply and shut it off. You'll need to avoid allowing more water into the pipes while removing the water and air that are already inside your plumbing system.
Run the Faucets in Your Home
Next, find every single faucet in your house and turn it on. Start at the lowest area of your house, such as a basement or garden hose attachment located outside. Then, move your way up toward the first-floor sinks, bathtubs, and shower stalls. Finally, turn on the second or third-story faucets as well. Don't ignore faucets in obscure locations like the garage, guest bathrooms, or laundry room. Allow the water to run completely out.
Turn Off the Faucet Located in the Lowest Area
Once the water in your pipes has been successfully removed, go back to the lowest area faucet and turn it off. Leave all other faucets on.
Turn the Main Water Supply Back On
Next, turn your main water supply on again and allow the water to run through your pipes. You may hear some initial gurgling, but once the water is flowing nicely, there should be no more sputtering or signs of trapped air.
When to Call a Professional Plumber
If this method doesn't fix the problem, or if the air returns again and again, then you probably need to get help from a professional plumber. It could be the result of having the incorrect-sized pipes, or you might be struggling with a water hammer. A certified plumber will have the experience and tools needed to inspect your plumbing system and give a proper diagnosis. They can also quickly and accurately repair the issue and ensure the longevity of your pipes.
