How to Install a Sink Pop-up Drain Stopper
Pop-up stoppers come in very handy. They allow you to fill the bathroom sink with water if needed and help prevent the loss of valuable items. For this reason, many homeowners wish to upgrade their basic sink drain to a popup variety. Or, someone may need to replace their existing model due to damage or deterioration. In either case, some families put off the task because they are intimidated by the installation process. At Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Atlanta, we enjoy helping local home and business owners find ways to improve their plumbing systems. Here are some tips on how you can install a pop-up drain stopper, and how to get help from a certified plumber if needed.
Gather Your Tools and Supplies
The first step is to gather all necessary materials. For this project, you will need a pop-up drain kit from your favorite hardware store, channel pliers, pipe joint compound, and plumber's putty. A bucket and towels can also help keep the area clean and tidy while working.
Remove the Existing Drain
Next, you'll need to remove the P-trap from your drain using your channel-type pliers. There should also be a mounting nut on the tailpiece, which can also be easily removed with your pliers or basin wrench. Lift the assembly away from the sink and thoroughly clean your sink from any stuck-on debris or putty.
Prepare the New Pop-Up Assembly
Take apart the pieces of your pop-up assembly kit to ensure that all items are there. Then, carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Apply Pipe Joint Compound and Plumber's Putty
Once the pop-up assembly is in place, be sure to add a thin layer of pipe joint compound to secure the rubber washer and to create a seal. It's also a good idea to use a considerable amount of plumber's putty around the underside of the flange which will keep leaks at bay.
Connect the Drain
Now you can put your new drain tailpiece assembly through the drain opening from beneath the sink. Put the drain ring into the opening and thread it onto the drain tailpiece by hand. Afterward, tighten the mounting nut with pliers. Be cautious about over-tightening to avoid damaging or cracking the materials.
Place the Drain Stopper, Pop Up Lever, and Pivot Rod
After the tailpiece is fully installed, it's time to put the pop-up stopper into the drain opening. Next, insert the pivot rod into the side of the tailpiece from below. Screw the pivot rod nut onto the fitting and test the pivot rod to make sure it works correctly and tighten.
Place the vertical pop-up lever into the hole behind the spout of your sink's faucet. Put your stopper in the open position and attach the strap to the end of the pop-up lever and the horizontal pivot rod. Connect the vertical strap to the pivot rod by placing a spring clip onto both sides of the strap. Check the stopper to make sure it closes and opens as needed.
Connect the P-Trap and Test for Leaks
Finally, reconnect the P-trap to the drain pipe and tailpiece. When everything is in its proper place, run water into the sink and test for leaks.
