How to Build a Drainage Catch Basin
Do you have a problem with flooding on your front lawn or backyard? Install a drainage catch basin to collect excess snowmelt and rainwater so you can have a healthy and beautiful property. At Mr. Rooter Plumbing we offer premium commercial and residential plumbing services for customers in Atlanta, Georgia and surrounding metro area neighborhoods. Have you considered installing a drainage catch basin to avoid water damage or mosquitos, but aren't sure what to do? Here are some simple steps to help you get started.
Create Your Trench
The first step is to prepare the area for installing a new catch basin and drainpipe. Dig a hole that is wide and deep enough to fully cover the basin. It needs to be between 6 to 12 inches deeper than the dimensions of the catch basin. Then dig a declining trench that is 18 inches deep and 8 inches wide for the pipe.
Apply Waterproof Silicon
Next, you will need to ensure that the connection between the catch basin and outlets are watertight. The best way to do this is to apply a waterproof silicone around the external area of the basin, then insert the outlet into the hole and twist to lock it securely in place. Some models have a gasket that is designed to use as a watertight seal. Perform this step according to the specific instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Install the Catch Basin
Drill multiple small holes through the bottom of the catch basin to keep water from accumulating in the bottom. Then fill the bottom of the hole you just finished digging with gravel. Put the basin on top and make sure it is level to the ground.
Attach the Drainpipe to the Catch Basin
Now, attach the drainpipe to the accompanying inlet on the basin. Apply more waterproof silicone on the outside of the inlet to keep it watertight and glue each section of the pipe together until you arrive at the point where excess water needs to be drained.
Refill the Trench
Finally, once you are certain that all the connections are well secured, you will need to fill in the trench with the soil you removed while digging.
